Sleeping Beauties

Destini and Olivia, originally uploaded by alington.

The two sleeping beauties in this photo are Olivia, my tiny Elfdoll fairy (an Asian BJD), and Destini, a American BJD by Berdine Creedy (Butterfly Child). Both are resin dolls.

Destini actually has three faceplates, and this is her sleeping face. It's fun to be able to switch them out and change her expression.

For a size comparison: Destini is 12-3/4 inches tall. Olivia is about 5.5 inches. Both have removable wigs. Neither of their faces includes eyes, however, since their sculpts don't include eye openings.

Christmas Fairy

Christmas Fairy, originally uploaded by alington.
This is Olivia, my Elfdoll Tiny fairy, who has been redressed in a tiny chiffon dress. She is currently sleeping in the largest prop in our house--the Christmas tree, which has already been set up. (These things happen early when you have four young children pestering you, you know.)

This year, we've added a new kitten to our household, so we've only decorated the tree with non-breakable ornaments--all in silver and clear. It's gorgeous, actually. (Lily likes to climb the tree and play with the ornaments.) Plus, it makes for some fantastic photos, as well.

You can see the rest of Olivia's photos on my Flickr photostream. Enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend!

Melin

Melin, originally uploaded by alington.
My newest BJD has arrived--and she's a Christmas gift. But I had to open the box to make sure none of her fingers were broken and to make sure she was complete.

And while the box was open, I went ahead and tried on her outfit--just to make sure everything was included. And since she was already dressed, I took a few quick photos. Hey, I can always package her back up and wrap up the box, right?

Her name is Melin, and she's another Doll-Zone resin ABJD. She's MSD-sized (about 17") with pink skin (or perhaps normal--it's very lovely). Her eyes are nearly shut: you can see the golden yellow just barely through her lashes. She's got a double-jointed body, also, so she poses like a dream.

Her outfit is amazing. It's inspired by Alice in Wonderland. It includes the chiffon dress with a sequin halter strap and crocheted overlay, a blue cotton and mesh petticoat, matching floral chiffon bloomers with ribbon trim, a ruffled choker, hair bow, pink hose, and adorable platform shoes.

You can see more photos on my Flickr photostream. Enjoy!

Thanksgiving sale at Dreamcastle Dolls

From now through Sunday, November 29, make a reasonable offer at Dreamcastle Dolls on any in-stock item (labeled "In Stock" below the pictures, or with an asterisk on the Splits page), and you just might be accepted!

Of course he also includes his signature Cullen crest bracelet as well.

Turn Me Bella Swan is the other special sale exclusive. Also originally retailing at $139.99, she is on sale for $89.99. Bella is also dressed for prom in a rich blue chiffon gown, mesh leggings, an embroidered ivory cardigan with ribbon flowers, beaded bracelet, pantyhose, knit socks, canvas sneakers, and a removable leg cast.

Check out the other great sales as well.

Tonner Doll gossip and rumors

Here are some totally unfounded rumors regarding Tonner Dolls. Actually, not entirely unfounded. These are a result of some questions and answers by Robert Tonner himself on a chat with the collectors on Sweetheart's Dolls Yahoo group. (If you're not a member, go join!)

  • Ann Estelle is taking a vacation right now.
  • Mary Englebreit (the 16" doll) was sidetracked and eventually dropped.
  • As much as he likes Kitty Collier, he thinks he did as much as he wanted with her.
  • Tonner never says never about a character. (Take Mei Li as an example.)
  • On Dr. Who: The samples were approved by the Dr. Who group many months ago. Now they are waiting on the BBC. Recently they received positive news that they are about at the end of that process (possibly even before Christmas).
  • Rita Hayworth would be a great addition to the movie star line, but there aren't any plans as of today.
  • About an UltraBasic™ version of Daphne: There aren't plans for her now, but they eventually get around to everything.
  • Tonner is a huge Joss Whedon fan (Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Those characters got a lot of votes on the last poll (yay!), but he's not going to spill his guts right now.
  • He has considered doing a resin version of Ellowyne Wilde, but nothing is in the works yet.
  • He is very excited about what will be released at IDEX. He hinted that if you love Cinderella, you should go, but didn't say much more. He said he "has big plans for the Cinderella head, but not quite the way it was." Also, he will be unveiling Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" and Disney's "Prince of Persia."
  • In response to his favorite doll, he is currently loving one of the new ones to be released at IDEX, and also Ellowyne.
  • The human-sized clothing gig is going great, and he's having a good time with it!

Morphoa in Pure Red

Morphoa in Pure Red, originally uploaded by alington.
More (and sharper) photos of Morphoa (by Doll-Zone) redressed, re-wigged and with new eyes, in a DollHeart outfit called Pure Red are now up at Flickr and my Mobile Me Gallery.

The eyes are by Peak's Woods, and they are acrylic, and a hazel shade. Quite lovely, if I do say so myself. The wig is a Tibetan lambswool wig by Michele Hardy.

The outfit, as are all the DollHeart outfits I've seen so far, fantastically detailed. If you're on the fence about splurging for one of these, my recommendation is to just go for it. You won't be disappointed. The details are just amazing.

Enjoy the photos!

SoulDoll Amy

Amy in hippie outfit, originally uploaded by alington.
My latest BJD arrival is an MSD SoulDoll (SoulKid) named Amy. She's a white skin resin girl on a double-jointed body, and she included a factory face-up. She was in stock at Denver Doll Emporium.

Her face-up has a surprising amount of pink tones in it, especially considering she has reddish eye brows, but I truly think she is lovely. Here, she is wearing a Paris wig by Monique Gold, in Carrot. She's dressed in a one-of-a-kind outfit created by Jen of JennyGrey, sort of a hippie-style blouse and vest.

Her random eyes are light violet. They are very pale, and sort of creepy looking (especially in photos), but I like them. I did get some other pairs (I think she'll look more natural in a darker shade), but I am really liking these weird ones.

Amy's sculpt is very serene. She's my first ABJD in this size--about 17" tall. Her body is easy to pose, and she stands and sits easily. I love her hands and feet! Her feet are especially cute. She is just calling out for body blushing, however.

You can see more photos of her on my Mobile Me gallery, or on Flickr. Enjoy!

Exclusive OOAK Raggedy Ann and Andy from Goodreau Doll

Rush over to the Goodreau Doll Lab today and check out this adorable set of OOAK ABC dolls: Tis the Season Ann and Andy!

This is a one-of-a-kind set, created from male and female ABC bodies (these are vinyl chunky ball-jointed dolls with changeable eyes and wigs, 12" tall) by doll artist Paulette Goodreau. If you buy this set, you'll own the only one! The retail price is $345, which includes both dolls and outfits.

The dolls' face-ups have been repainted by hand (by Paulette). Plus Ann has had her ears pierced. The outfits are handmade by Gale Torres from the Wee Wardrobe. The dolls' wigs, eyes and shoes are also included.

Additionally, you can find a resin Holly full set for $185, and she's as cute as can be. I adore the 8" resin dolls by Goodreau--they are such sturdy dolls with great figures (great for beginning BJD collectors, and wonderfully affordable).

Holly (this limited edition version) includes a repainted face (also by Paulette), blonde wig with a floral bow decoration in it, a gorgeous red holiday dress with ribbon and tulle trim, fun white socks trimmed with red jingle bells and black shoes with red bows. Holly is shown posing with a stuffed white horse, but it doesn't say whether this horse is included. I love this girl! (I'm not sure, but I think Holly might be the Emersen sculpt.)

Another tempting Island Doll BJD

Amy, an Island Doll double-jointed resin doll, is available for pre-order. When you order her from JPopDolls by November 30, you can get the face-up, glass eyes, and sleeping bag for free.

This doll is crafted from environmental resin, and she stands 41 cm tall (about MSD size). She has double joints for maximum posability. Her retail price is $210 for the nude doll, and $296.50 for the dressed doll.

The dressed doll comes with shoes, and a fantastic Lolita style dress with apron, choker with attached chain, hair band, and socks.

More exclusives from FAO Schwarz

While doing some more Christmas shopping at FAO Schwarz, I discovered a few more exclusives of interest, including:

  • We Wish You a Merry Piggy by Tonner Doll Company. Retail price is $199.99, and she's currently in stock.
  • Disney Princess Tote by Madame Alexander. Retail price is $54.99, and the item is available for pre-order (ship date estimated at 11/25).
  • Also by Madame Alexander, the Wizard of Oz Dress-Up Tote. Retail Price is $54.99, available for pre-order (ship date estimated at 11/25).

Cute rag dolls from FAO Schwarz

Check out these new rag dolls available from FAO Schwarz, courtesy of Doll Head (and follow that cool blog while you're there). They are really quite fun and cute.

New exclusive Sinister Circus doll - Madam Myst by Tonner

Madame Myst is the latest addition to the Sinister Circus ReImagination Line by Tonner Doll, and she's an exclusive to TonnerDirect. She's available for pre-order now (by phone only) at a retail price of $189.99.

This lovely fortune teller is a limited edition of 150 pieces. She includes both fashion feet and flat feet. She will come to you dressed in a shimmering knit bodysuit with attached chiffon shawl with decorative fringe, brocade corset, and a voluminous tiered skirt crafted of chiffon and lace. Her graying hair is pulled back with a chiffon scarf. Accessories include gold hoop earrings, chain and faux leather necklace, hose, and faux leather boots.

I have to admit, I'm rather taken, and sorely tempted!

Morphoa and Sky in DollHeart

Morphoa and Sky in DollHeart, originally uploaded by alington.
Check out Morphoa's new outfit. I bought a special new outfit--just for her--by DollHeart, called Pure Red. (Why it's called Pure Red, when only the hat is just red, escapes me.) For this photoshoot, Morphoa has gotten a new set of eyes (hazel) by Peak's Woods and is wearing a blonde Tibetan lamb wig by Michele Hardy. Sky is dressed in Alice Fantasy by DollHeart (wig also by DollHeart).

The outfit is adorable, and it has many intricate pieces. I have to admit, DollHeart outdoes itself time and again in quality. The outfit includes:
  • red hat with stuffed printed heart trimming
  • long (bell) sleeved cotton shirt with velcro closure and button front trim
  • printed collar with snap closure
  • long necklace with puff heart trim
  • triple chain belt with floral trim
  • floral print skirt with attached corset with zip closure
  • red skirt with snap closure and elegant pin tuck embellishment
  • white petticoat with lace trim
  • cotton bloomers with lace trim
  • lace socks with pom pom trim
The outfit is just lots of fun. You can see full-size photos on my Mobile Me gallery. The details are amazing!

Seine - New resin fashion doll by Doug James

Seine is a newly released fashion doll by Doug James of JDJ International. She's 19" tall, crafted of break-resistant resin. She's highly articulated, with joints at the neck, shoulders, bust and hips, plus double joints at wrists, elbows and knees, which allows her to have a high range of movement.

She's a wigged doll, and wears a 5-6 size wig. She's similar in size to CED dolls (with a slightly smaller size shoulders and rib cage), so she should be able to share most of their clothes.

Midnight, the first in the Seine Fashion Doll Collection, includes the gorgeous blue gown, silk balloon shrug, gold shoes, necklace, three bracelets, cocktail glass, handbag, carrying case, and plexiglass stand.

Her retail price is $595. Happily Ever After will be carrying her (I saw her there first--and they are a great place to order from), and I believe Cherished Friends may also be carrying her as well.

As an aside--this doll seems to be marketed toward the fashion doll collector, and not towards the ball-jointed doll collector. Perhaps if you enjoy Sybarites, this doll might appeal to you, as her price is some less than Sybarites. However, her fashion is definitely not as edgy as the Sybarites'. She doesn't have interchangeable eyes, like normal BJDs, nor is she described as a strung doll. And her scale is larger than the other 16" tall dolls. I wonder who will be most interested in her.

I do find her promotional photos very lovely, however. I personally am interested to see real life photos of her!

Ultra Basic Mei Li is available for order

Ultra Basic™ Mei Li is available for ordering now from TonnerDirect. There is a limited stock on hand, and the remainder of the orders will be filled in early December. Orders to be filled on a first come, first serve basis.

Ultra Basic™ dolls include a knit body suit, but do not include a stand or shoes. This basic Mei Li doll has bendy wrists and 13 points of articulation, long raven rooted saran hair and blue eyes. Her skin tone is closest to Antoinette's "Bloom" skin tone.
A note on Mei Li... This sculpt hasn't been seen since 2003: Manhattan Magic Mei Li was the last doll produced with this facial sculpt.
Ultra Basic™ Esme and Sydney are also available for pre-order (you pay the full $59.99 now, and the dolls will ship mid-December).

Signature Style Tyler

Signature Style Tyler, originally uploaded by alington.
A classy new lady, Signature Style Tyler, has made it to my collection. I'm thrilled with her quality.

Tyler is a brown-eyed beauty with a natural face-up (save for her signature red lips), with her brunette hair in a ponytail. Her taffeta blouse has interesting rhinestone buttons, and her microsequined skirt has a black tulle layer over the top, which gives it extra dimension. She's wearing black hose, rhinestone stud earrings, a black satin belt with a rhinestone buckle, plus black t-strap shoes.

She's close to the original version which made her famous, but I love this glammed up version. It fits my collection much better. You can see the rest of her photoshoot on my Mobile Me gallery. Enjoy!

Tyler's 10th Anniversary Centerpiece Dolls and new UltraBasics

Check out the blog for full details, but I'd be remiss to forget to post the souvenir doll and the companion doll on my blog. The event was Saturday, November 7, 2009. The two dolls:
  • A Perfect Ten (LE225), a limited edition original sculpt brown-eyed Tyler with her hair in a complicated up-do. She's wearing a gorgeous black evening gown, with one-sleeve styling, an oversized flower trim on the shoulder, and lots of gorgeous black satin ruffles and lace. A few of these are left for sale from TonnerDirect for $195.
  • It Was a Very Good Decade (LE150) is the centerpiece doll. She has flowing auburn hair and brown eyes, and is dressed in a long sleeveless gold microsequined gown with a train and a high front slit. It has gold chiffon floral trim. The lining of the gown is a contrasting purple for some fun interest. Tyler is wearing matching gold beaded jewelery and strappy gold sandals. These are available for sale from TonnerDirect for $295.
Also available as event souvenirs was a limited edition book, Tyler Wentworth Tenth Anniversary Album by Tom Courtney and a silver rhinestone pin.

Plus, I'm pleased to see the announcement of the upcoming UltraBasic Mei Li was also made at the event, though no date or edition size has yet been announced on the blog. The retail is $59.99, and Mei Li is available for sale now. Sydney and Esme are also listed, but they will be available to order on November 11.

Gene is retiring!

After 15 years, Mel Odom has announced that he will be retiring Gene Marshall. Here is a letter he wrote to Gene fans in explanation:

Hey Kids,

This is a letter I've been writing in my head for quite some time, but have not been able to actually put down on paper. It's a tough letter to write and I've been pretty emotional about it. (Big breath) I've been feeling lately like it's a perfect time for Gene and her friends to retire. I've been working on Gene since 1991. That's when the first
drawings of her are dated and I'd probably had her in my head for some time before that. The point is, she's been a consuming interest of mine for close to 20 years. It's been the most detail intensive project of my life and certainly the most fun. I've been given much because of Gene; acclaim, financial security and the best bunch of friends and collectors anyone could ever expect from their profession. It's been an amazing journey for me- completely different than what I had imagined.

This year, we've had a really wonderful collection, with awards and popular triumphs and a great sense of energy among you guys. I've really enjoyed it. It's been amazing. And the Hollywood Royalty minis being a hit was just the sprinkles on the cupcake for me. I just think it's always better going out a winner, while you are on top.

This is the thing...I want to do something else. I'll be (gulp) 60 next years and feel like there are other things I can accomplish if I can devote my full attention to them, like I have done with Gene. I've practically ignored my first loves, drawing and painting, for far too long. For twenty years before Gene, I was known as an illustrator and
graphic artist. I don't think I can go back to being an illustrator; that's over for me. But I'd like to be known as a painter and I'd like to maybe teach art. As some of you know, I've been knocking on the doors of art galleries with my paintings for the past few years and am not about to give up on that particular dream of mine. I feel like I have enough time for one more great phase in my career, even though I'm not positive what it is.

Gene is in my head and heart and nothing I can ever do will change that. She's always been with me in some form and will stay with me and very probably morph into another phase of whatever it is I do, paintings maybe. But I've always had to change every so often, like when I stopped focusing on illustrating and created a fashion doll. This is
one of those times. So Gene and I are pulling a Garbo, and retiring, but not without a fabulous sendoff.

I have gone over my plans with Integrity and we all want to make sure that we have a proper celebration for Gene and her friends (both plastic and human). I have really enjoyed working with Integrity and making these past few years some of Gene's best ever. The Integrity team and I are planning one last, big blowout for all of us- a 15th Anniversary convention to celebrate Gene and all her friends, to be held in early June in Philadelphia. And for this special party we're creating one more collection, "The Stardust Collection", a curtain call of sorts for all of our characters, and get this... including Trent. Ashton Drake is graciously allowing us to use the original molds to create one more classic Trent for the party. So, Trent will be there and Oona and Ivy and Violet and Madra. I'll be there and hopefully everyone will be there, to celebrate 15 years of the coolest thing to happen to fashion dolls since high heel feet.

Facts and forms will be forthcoming, but I wanted to tell you all this personally. There will also be a special Gene happening in early 2010; you'll be privy to the information later on. It'll be fine, you'll see. Gene will be a perfect 15-year long phenomenon in the doll world, a story with a humble start and surprise ending- a beautiful arc of stories, characters and costumes that changed the doll world. And as long as Cher and Barbra Streisand are in this world, there's always a chance of a comeback somewhere down the road.

I'll still be blogging; the W Club has happily agreed to continue to send all of you my "Mel Mail updates", right through the big party in June. Later on, I'll be blogging from my own website
www.melodomart.com, which should be completed and up soon. Any of you who are interested can come along with me for the rest of the journey as well. You're all invited. Thank you for everything and remember to always....

Play nice Kids,
[Mel Signature]

Challenge four - Couture Doll

Be sure to swing by Couture Doll's website to check out the wonderful entries for the fourth challenge, On the Fashion Edge. The designers were challenged to come up with an avant garde outfit for their favorite fashion doll this week, and the photos are simply stunning! I'm amazed at the fun materials used, the interesting silhouettes, and the accents and accessories on the models.

Congratulations, designers! Excellent work this week! I'd have a difficult time choosing a winner (or even my favorite) this week. So many excellent entries!

New Ultra Basic Dolls coming soon from Tonner Direct

Dolls Magazine Digital - January 2010

Check out the back cover (page 64) of the current edition of Dolls Magazine -- Tonner Doll is advertising new UltraBasic™ dolls, including Esme, a blonde Sydney, and a gorgeous Mei Li (with a limited production run). All three dolls have a lovely face-up, I think, except that Sydney's lip color could have been a bit more neutral, instead of typical Tonner red.

Like the Tyler UltraBasics™, the dolls will be exclusive to TONNERDirect.com, unfortunately, which means I can't buy them from my favorite Tonner dealer. If you'd like to be notified as to when the dolls will be available for sale, join TONNERDirect's email list here.

OOAK auction event to be held at Tyler's 10th Anniversary

I found a post on Tonner's Facebook page this morning, stating that an auction would be held at Tyler's 10th Anniversary on November 7, 2009.

All proceeds from this auction will benefit employee Carol Dwyer, who is battling breast cancer. These additional items will be auctioned off at the event. One more special one-of-a-kind prototype doll will still be announced.

The dolls up for auctions are three never produced prototypes:

  • Wicked Witch A Most Gratifying Day (perfect for you Oz fans)
  • Pirate Lord (for the pirates among you)
  • Pirate God (for our Johnny Depp fans)

The Royal Mermaid Mera prototype is still live on Ebay. Still with one more day to go, this auction is up to $997.26. Wow! That's fantastic!

What's new at Wilde Imagination

Check out the new line-up at Wilde Imagination. Ellowyne has added some new items.

My favorite is a new basic doll, Essential Ellowyne, Too Wigged Out. She is a wigged doll (and includes three wigs: a long wavy blonde, short raven bob, and long dark red with bangs) with inset acrylic blue eyes and applied lashes. She comes dressed in a shirred floral bodysuit with matching stockings and slippers, and a stand. Her expected shipping date is December 5, and she retails for $114.00.

There's lots of other great items, including Ellowyne in Whine, a Modern Doll Convention debut, several other dressed dolls, four new outfits, and lots of new accessories. While you're visiting, don't forget to check out the end of edition specials for some great deals.
